Periodic oral evaluation
The periodic oral evaluation is the most common type of dental examination.
A periodic oral evaluation, as the name suggests, should take place periodically.
The ADA recommends one every 6 months for adults and children.
A periodic oral evaluation is built upon the foundation of a comprehensive oral evaluation and It helps keep things in check and allows to update a patient treatment plan.
A periodic oral evaluation is performed to see if anything has changed with your oral health since your last periodic oral evaluation visit or your comprehensive oral evaluation
During a periodic oral evaluation your dentist will perform a visual examination, and possibly to detect:
- New cavities
- Weaknesses in already installed crowns, fillings and bridgework
- Gum recession
- bone recession
- Teeth deterioration due to abnormal bite
- Teeth deterioration due to bruxism
- Teeth deterioration due problems of the jaw
- Plaque build-up
- Weaker immune systems that are susceptible to bacterial infection
Bite-Wings- Generally recommended as a regular part of treatment once per year.
Dentist will be looking for any changes since your last periodic oral evaluation visit or comprehensive oral evaluation
to catch any early signs of serious illness that may be otherwise undetected.
Some illnesses which can be detected during periodic oral evaluation are:
- Immune abnormalities
- Sinus problems
- Oral cancer
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular problems
